In the 2019-20 year, Unicorn Charity Club grew to 15 unicorns, and we worked on 3 amazing group impact projects that focused on self-care, compassion, and the environment. Read more below to learn about each project, what unicorns learned through service, their total impact, and all of the badges earned.

Prep for Success

Our first charity project of the year was Prep for Success. For this project, we partnered with Women Helping Women Empowering Employment Success (WHW). WHW's mission is to provide the unemployed and underemployed residents of Orange County the skills and resources needed to get and keep good jobs.

Exploration. Why do we need good-paying jobs? In the Prep for Success project, unicorns learned why getting and maintaining good-paying jobs is necessary for economically supporting our families. Specifically, they explored what our families' everyday, basic needs are, like having secure housing, adequate food, warm clothing, and reliable transportation. Unicorns also created their own resumes and went on mock interviews to land their dream jobs!

Creation. Our project goal was to organize a business clothing donation drive to help WHW's work in providing appropriate business clothing to hopeful job seekers so that they are prepared and confident walking into job interviews and starting new jobs.

Adventure. It was a blast! Not only did our unicorns collect and sort through all of the donations, but they also had so much fun trying on some of the goodies, including the tempting high heels and purses they got their hands on. (Yes, it was indeed a fancy affair!) After organizing all of the clothes and accessories, unicorns delivered the donations and toured the facility with WHW's CEO. What a treat it was to see their facility operations, the "makeover" client showroom, and their retail store.

Total Impact. For our Prep for Success project, we donated 3 large carts full of business clothing for men and women.

Badges. By the end of the impact project, unicorns earned the following badges for achieving their target charity project and core value skills.

Be Heart Healthy

UCC worked with the American Heart Association (AHA) on our Be Heart Healthy project. AHA fights cardiovascular disease and stroke through medical research funding and public education on healthy living and appropriate cardiac care.

Exploration. In this project, unicorns learned what it means to be Heart Healthy by creating personal journals that support new daily habits of eating smart, moving more, and being well with less stress and plenty of sleep.

Creation. UCC's Be Heart Healthy project goal focused on raising public awareness to support everyone’s heart health. As a result, we partnered with our local school and hosted an AHA Kids Heart Challenge Assembly and Jump-a-thon Dance Party.

Adventure. Unicorns hosted an amazing Kids Heart Challenge Assembly and Jump-a-thon Dance Party event at their local school. Kids learned how to support their heart health, including NOT smoking and vaping, as well as had fun competing for Mexican jumping beans at the jump-a-thon, dancing to high-energy beats, or running goofy relay races with eggs and ropes!

Total Impact. Yes, we had a lot of fun. But best of all, we raised over $1,700 to help save people's lives with CPR training and cardiac medical research.

Badges. By the end of the Be Heart Healthy impact project, unicorns earned the following badges for achieving their target charity project and core value skills.

Stop Making Plastic Soup

UCC worked with the California Department of Parks and Recreation in our Stop Making Plastic Soup project. The California Department of Parks and Recreation aims to preserve the state’s biological diversity and protect its valuable natural and cultural resources for the health, inspiration, and education of Californians.

Exploration. Why is this project so important? Well, did you know that many sea animals die from eating or getting trapped in plastic trash every day? Yes, it's true! That's why unicorns learned about what plastic soup is, where it comes from, and what we can do to help stop it from hurting sea life, our oceans, and ourselves. (Yep, we also hurt ourselves with plastic soup because we could be eating seafood with microplastics in it - so gross!)

Creation. There are many things we can do to stop making plastic soup, including recycling and reusing what we have before consuming more plastic things. For our Stop Making Plastic Soup project, our goal was to adopt a local beach and clean it up.

Adventure. In March 2020, we gathered at Huntington Beach State Park to clean up the beach. It was certainly a successful adventure. We removed lots of plastic debris from the sand. We even saw mussels that had washed ashore and died because they were entangled in a fishing net. It was unbelievable. Having the opportunity to witness these sea animals entangled, trapped, and left to die was a real-life lesson that all of the unicorns learned from. Seeing is believing.

Total Impact. We picked up over 3 buckets of plastic trash from the beach that day. But do you know what the greatest impact was from doing this project? Leaving the beach clean up with the lasting impression that how we live can affect everything around us, including other lives and the environment.

Badges. By the end of the Stop Making Plastic Soup impact project, unicorns earned the following badges for achieving their target charity project and core value skills.
