For 2020-21, Unicorn Charity Club is changing things up a bit! We will be incorporating the use of Katamundi, a social impact network that enables us to collaborate on charity projects together online. This year, we will work on two group projects together and encourage each unicorn to sponsor her own passion project we will support as a group! Read more below to learn about each project planned for the current year.

No One Left Hungry

We will start the year off with No One Left Hungry in the fall. For this project, we will be working with Second Harvest, Orange County's largest hunger-relief organization that feeds approximately 250,000 people in need each month through more than 300 community partners and programs in every city in the county.

Exploration. No one should ever go hungry. EVER. But every day, many people are unable to get the nourishment needed to stay healthy and well, especially during our recent COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic crisis due to systemic unemployment. In our No One Left Hungry project, unicorns will learn why eating healthy food is important, why food shortages exist, and how food shortages negatively affect our communities.

Creation. Our project goal will be to organize a virtual food drive to help fund Second Harvest's community feeding program across Orange County.

Adventure. TBD

Total Impact. TBD

Badges. By the end of the No One Left Behind impact project, unicorns will earn the following badges for achieving their target charity project and core value skills.

Don't Be Trashy

In the spring, UCC will take on Don't Be Trashy for our second group project in honor of Earth Day! We will partner with USAgain, a national non-profit that aims to divert old and unwanted clothing from our US landfills and export them to third world countries that need them. Since it's inception in 1999, USAgain has clothed over 16 million people!

Exploration. We are a very trashy society. In fact, we dump about 4.51 lbs of trash per person each day. That totals approximately  267.8 million tons of trash per year. Yes, you read that correctly! And of this large amount of trash, about 139.4 million tons wind up in our landfills. We have come to value convenience so much, that we're now known as "the throw-away society" because so much of our waste comes from single-use products, like those daily Starbucks coffees we enjoy so much! In this project, we will explore our trash habits, why so much trash is harmful to our environment, and what we can do to help reduce the amount of trash that winds up in landfills.

Creation. Our project goal will be to organize a clothing and shoe drive to donate to USAgain's clothing recycling program. Not only will we be able to clean out our closets and shoe racks, but we'll also produce less trash that will end up in our local landfills.

Unicorn Personal Projects

This year, each unicorn will be encouraged to pursue her own passion project to support and make a difference. Once all of the unicorns have created their projects, UCC will support their fellow unicorns' project efforts and missions as a group! Read more below to learn about each project planned for the current year.

  • Prancing Silver Blossom Unicorn is creating a new project called Don't Eat Dog Meat to help stop the dog meat trade in Asia and support dog rescue efforts.
  • Happy McCuddles Unicorn (Hailee) is creating a new project called Aiding Literacy to provide more opportunities and support to people who cannot read.
  • Sweet Happy Feet Unicorn (Kayleen) is creating a new project called Save the Yangtze Finless Porpoise to protect this critically endangered species from becoming extinct.
